Reading the ASX open without forcing a trade
The Australian open can invite haste. A short method for narrating the first thirty minutes using volume and range alone.
Many Australian equity traders feel behind if they are flat by 10:15. That pressure invents setups. In clinics we practice a different open ritual: describe, then decide.
The fifteen-minute sketch
- Note the overnight reference or prior close.
- Measure the opening drive’s range and volume versus the prior five opens on the same name or index.
- Mark whether the first pullback prints on lighter or heavier volume.
- Only then ask whether initiative buyers or sellers still control.
If step three shows heavy volume against the open drive, the “strong open” story is already under dispute. That observation alone prevents a surprising number of chase entries.
Thin names need extra humility
Outside the most liquid ASX names, a single broker print can distort a one-minute volume bar. We encourage stepping up a timeframe before declaring absorption. Price action reading still works; the sample size simply shrinks.
Try it tomorrow
For one open, write the sketch before you click. Compare it with what you actually did. The gap between those two pages is usually the real curriculum.
